Gospel Values

The Importance of Gospel Values at St. Cuthbert’s

At our Catholic school, we believe that the teachings of the Gospel are foundational to the growth and development of our children. Gospel values are integral to our ethos, guiding our actions, shaping our community, and nurturing a spirit of respect and compassion. By embedding these values into our daily lives, we help our children not only to excel academically but also to become kind, responsible citizens.

Year Group Gospel Values

Each year in our school is linked to a specific Gospel value, which they study throughout the academic year. This approach allows students to explore the depth and significance of their assigned value, connecting it to their own lives and experiences. For example, Reception class focuses on gentleness, learning how to practice kindness and empathy in their interactions. Year 1 children concentrate on forgiveness, where they are encouraged to resolve conflicts and embrace reconciliation. This dedicated study fosters a deeper understanding of how these values impact their daily life.

Monthly Focus in Collective Worship

In addition to the year-long exploration, we emphasize one Gospel value each month during our collective worship sessions. This monthly focus creates a communal opportunity for reflection and growth. As a school community, we gather to pray, share stories, and engage in activities that reinforce the chosen value. For instance, during a month dedicated to compassion, students might participate in service projects that support those in need, allowing them to put their faith into action.

Core Gospel Values

The Gospel values we prioritise include:

  • YN/R Gentleness: Cultivating a spirit of kindness and understanding in our interactions.
  • Y1 Forgiveness: Emphasising the importance of letting go of grudges and embracing reconciliation.
  • Y2 Peace: Promoting harmony and understanding within our school community.
  • Y3 Courage: Using God’s strength and guidance to be strong in our faith.
  • Y4 Compassion: Instilling a sense of empathy and concern for the suffering of others.
  • Y5 Justice: Inspiring students to stand up for what is right and support fairness for all.
  • Y6 Integrity: Fostering honesty and moral courage in all aspects of life.

Behaviour Policy

Our school behaviour policy is thoughtfully designed around the 7 Gospel values shared with children, fostering a nurturing and respectful environment for all children. Created with input from our School Council, the child-friendly policy encourages children to reflect on their behaviour and understand the impact of their actions on themselves and others. By linking their choices to values such as compassion, forgiveness, and integrity, we encourage our children to take responsibility and grow into caring individuals who contribute positively to our school community.

Living Our Values

Teachers and staff consistently refer to these values in lessons, interactions, and school events, creating a unified message that reinforces their importance. Our commitment to Gospel values shapes not only our educational practices but also the very essence of our school community. By embedding these teachings into every aspect of school life, we prepare our children to be compassionate leaders and faithful individuals in the world. Together, we strive to live out the message of the Gospel.
