We are a Silver Award for the Rights Respecting School. This shows that St. Cuthbert’s are ‘Rights Aware’. The children live out the rights they have and are brilliant ‘rights respecters’! Each week, we focus on a particular right and this is communicated during Monday’s Celebration of the Word. In Friday’s Celebration Assembly, we reflect back on how we have helped others achieve their rights and we give out rights respecting awards for the week for those children who have upheld rights or helped to ensure that all children receive them.
Please continue to discuss children’s rights with your child and family, we know so much work has already taken place at home in connection to this.
Please read the full St Cuthbert’s SILVER Report following our assessment.

Throughout the year we would like your support with charity, awareness and fundraising events to promote the rights of children in need and we thank you for your support in many previous events.
Teachers and staff model rights respecting language and attitudes and make strategic decisions that involve students. Rights are taught and learned throughout the whole school community through training, curriculum, assemblies, topics, focus days and displays. Governors are informed of progress frequently and are invited to participate actively as much as they can. We have a dedicated Rights Respecting Governor.
Pupils are encouraged to have an active role in their learning and in the community. They can join in steering groups such as the Climate Friendly Action Team, Mini Vinnies and School Council. They will be invited to talk about or demonstrate their understanding of their rights, to look at, choose and create RRSA resources for display around school. They are encouraged to recycle more, help children in their local community, in England in in other countries as well as many more events which link to UNCRC Articles. The children also understand that if they have a right, then so do others and this helps them to think about children who might not achieve their rights.
The children have been standing up for their own and others’ rights using Article 12 Every child has the right to express their views and opinions.
The children have made a fantastic start to the new school year completing work on some very important articles and class charters. Above are the charters from Year 4 and Year 1.
Nadia from Tranquil Treehouse came into classes from Years 1-6 to complete some mindfulness and reflection activities. These activities have shown the children how to relax, reflect on their strengths and weaknesses and to help them manage emotions. This has been in light of lockdown and to help the children to settle back into school life.
This has been a tremendous success and has really helped our children achieve their right in Article 24 – every child has the right to the best health and health care.
Here are some photographs of the children enjoying their time with Nadia during the last few weeks.
The Rights Respecting School Award (RRSA) is awarded by UNICEF and focuses on promoting children’s rights within school.
Below is a list of the Rights of the Child agreed by the UN. These are the rights we are working with towards our Rights Respecting School Award.
List of rights
UNICEF works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. The Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.
Using the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) as our guide, we will work with all children and adults in our school to make more people aware of these rights. We have achieved the Bronze level of this award.
Working towards this level means that the children will be aware not just of their own rights, but of all children around them in school, in Britain and around the world.
