Our school is concerned about climate change and wishes to be part of the climate solution. We realize that we need to constantly look for new ways of improving our climate performance, in order to minimise the amount of greenhouse gasses that our school releases into the atmosphere. To help us to take positive climate action we have formed a Climate Friendly Action Team who have worked with the whole school community to write a Climate Friendly Action Plan.
We have used our audit results to:
Our 10 new actions are:
ACTION 1: We will utilise our garden space and grow food in our garden planters for school.
ACTION 2: We will complete regular energy audits of our classrooms to ensure we reduce our energy consumption. This will be held as a competition to see who can waste the least energy.
ACTION 3: IT Monitors will be assigned to each classroom to ensure electronics and lights are turned off when they need to be i.e. over breaks and at the end of the day.
ACTION 4: We will plant more fruit trees in our school grounds.
ACTION 5: We will hold more outdoor lessons as part of our teaching.
ACTION 6: Grey water will be used for our garden and indoor plants instead of using from the tap.
ACTION 7: We will install new water butts in our school. We will also check current ones and see if they can be better used.
ACTION 8: We will introduce a walking bus to reduce the number of vehicles being used to get school or reduce journey times of vehicle use.
ACTION 9: We will lead a campaign and share the message to travel sustainably in our local community.
ACTION 10: We will undertake a recycling campaign in school. This will involve recycling items such as paper, plastic, clothes, batteries etc.
Here are some of our team at the first meeting:
In the group, we had a competition to see who could design a logo and Finley P was the winner. His logo shows two sides to the world, one which is polluted and causing climate change, and the other side, which is green, where renewable resources are being used and the world is a happier place. Well done Finley – this logo will be used on all of our work and on displays.
Have a look back at what we did last year.
The Eco Council were very busy on Friday lunchtime. They put on some special gloves and walked around the school grounds to pick up any pieces of litter lying around. They were shocked at the huge amounts of rubbish found tucked away in our trees and bushes. Most of the rubbish had been blown in from other places. In particular, they spent lots of time picking up remnants of fireworks. They all did a fantastic job, and our school is now a much cleaner environment. Thank you, Eco Council.
